Cellular Records Analysis: Going Beyond Location Data

When it comes to digital forensics, particularly mobile forensics, location data is typically what is sought after the most. This isn’t surprising considering the fact that it is the most pertinent with respect to a person’s whereabouts during an incident, as well as the timeframe for said incident. That said, there is definitely more to cellular records and its analysis than merely location data, or at least a lot more that’s ancillary to location data.

Going beyond location data provides a deeper level of analysis that can lend further validity to the records themselves, as well as any conclusions drawn from the analysis. Here’s a guide on the subject.

Link Analysis

In addition to location data, obtaining cellular records the right way can help us understand who the target is communicating with, when they’re communicating with them, and how often. This is commonly known as link analysis. However, effective analysis of cellular records goes even beyond that.

For example, if the target is suspected of infidelity with a married woman, their call detail records will show calls and texts sent and received by the woman. What is likely to happen when they meet? Their texts and messages will stop, and their location data will show them in the same place at the same time.

Link analysis allows digital forensics experts to discern a pattern of usage with respect to who the person calls and texts the most.

Usage Patterns

Say you have a target who is suspected of cheating on their spouse. What if they use their lunch hour to meet their paramour about twice a week but leaves his cell phone in the office. How can one determine whether they’re really cheating or not?

Well, the answer lies in being able to tell what is likely during the timeframe of interest in relation to the target’s other usage patterns. For instance, in the above-described scenario, a forensics expert will be able to determine a) the target’s usage patterns when they are not with their paramour and b) a pattern of texts and/or missed calls during the time period when the target was separated from their phone.
